The Democratic congresswoman accused the president of weaponizing federal law enforcement against his political opponents

US federal agents have raided the home of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, whom President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused of immigration fraud.

Omar, a Somali-born naturalized US citizen, is a vocal critic of Trump’s policies and a supporter of Palestinian rights. Agents were filmed searching her home in Washington, DC, on Monday morning.

Without naming Omar, the Justice Department (DOJ) confirmed that investigators from the Department of Homeland Security had executed a court-authorized search warrant as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. A senior White House official told the Washington Post that Omar’s residence was searched as part of a probe into possible immigration fraud.

“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar wrote on X after the raid. She accused Trump of using “baseless lies and smear campaigns” as a means of “political intimidation.”

Asked about the search later that day, Trump described Omar as “totally crooked” but denied responsibility for the raid. “I think she’s a terrible person. But that’s really up to the DOJ. I have nothing to do with it,” he said. Trump also argued that Omar had arrived in the US from “a non-country.”

Critics have long accused Omar of immigration fraud, including an unsubstantiated allegation that she once married her brother, which she has denied. Last month, Trump’s border czar Tom Homan told Fox News that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had opened an investigation into Omar but declined to provide details.

“If someone committed an immigration violation, if someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congressman or not, no one’s above the law,” he said.

Omar’s family fled civil war-torn Somalia in the 1990s when she was eight. She became a US citizen in 2000 at 17.

Elected to the House of Representatives in 2018, she became one of the most high-profile Democrats during Trump’s first term. In 2019, Israel barred Omar and fellow Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib from entering the country.

Trump has accused Omar of being unpatriotic, supporting Islamic extremism, and spreading anti-Semitism, and has called on her to leave the country. Omar, in turn, has accused Trump of racism, Islamophobia, and authoritarianism, describing his attacks on her as a “really unhealthy and creepy obsession.”

Last year, the DOJ directed its lawyers to step up efforts to revoke the citizenship of naturalized Americans in eligible cases. US federal authorities have also intensified their crackdown on fraud schemes in Omar’s home state of Minnesota, including cases involving members of its large Somali American community.

The investigations have targeted alleged misuse of taxpayer-funded food assistance, housing support, and autism treatment programs. One of the largest cases involved a nonprofit whose operators and associates were accused of stealing roughly $250 million from a federal child nutrition program during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants. There is Violence, Murder, and Mayhem all over the State. The people of Minnesota must fight back,” Trump wrote on Truth Social last week. His remarks prompted Democrats to accuse him of stigmatizing the entire Somali community.
